JOHNSON
Michael Johnson celebrating after setting a new world record

INTRODUCTION: On this page you will learn the best way to keep your body in shape and how to get strong and fast. Track and field is very old.   But did you know that your arm are more important than your legs in running? So don’t shake your head when your running.  Make sure to keep a 90 degree angle on your elbows when your running. Don’t twist your eyes either because it’s not good for your eyes.  All the Track and field events are: Short distance, Cross country, The Discus,The Pole vault,The Hurdles,Shot put,Javelin,The High Jump,Steeplechase,Relays,Race Walking,The Long Jump,Triple Jump, and the Hammer throw.  So the first one I’m going to talk about is Short distance. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Sprint Races/Short distance

Short distance is one of the most popular things to do in Track and Field. Also the fastest man on earth named Usain Bolt likes to do Short distance. The race that Usain Bolt likes to really do is the 100 meter. But so here are all the Short distance races: The 400 meter is 1 times around the Track for Out door but indoor it’s 2 times. The 200 meter is  half around the Track for Outdoor but indoor it’s 1 time. The 100 meter is one straight away of the Track for Outdoor but for indoor it’s half the track but they don’t often do the  100 meter for indoor track meets. Also finally the last short distance race is the 55. The 55 is just indoor not Outdoor. The 55 meter is not on the track. It is in it’s own rectangle. But in short distance you have to go as fast as you can. That’s why it is called short distance. But some people aren’t fast enough for short distance so they turn out to be long distance runners.

LONG DISTANCE

2012MoFarahPA060812_1200x800 Now the second one I’m going to talk about is Cross country. Cross country is Middle distance, Long distance, and the Marathon. Some of the most famous Marathons are the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon. But Adults aren’t the only people who are allowed to do Marathons. Kids can do Marathons too. But it’s not good for kids to do Marathons. But people in wheel chairs and grandparents can do it too. Everybody can do Marathons. But women sometimes have trouble doing Marathons. But Marathons are not easy as you think. You have to practice a lot for Marathons. Some people get ahead of other people but they can’t maintain their speed. Sometimes it’s hard to keep your speed when your doing Marathons. so that’s why you have to practice. Also practice makes better. Also don’t give up during Marathons because I know you can do it. Marathons often have police to guide you or signs that point were to go so that you don’t lose the way to the finish line. So now I’m going to talk about Middle distance. Middle distance is not as bad as you think. The most common races in Middle distance are:The 800meter and the 1500meter. Now I’m going to talk about Long distance. Long distance is almost as long as Marathon. The most common Long distance races are the 3000, and the 5000. When you run long distance try to practice it with all the practice time you have. Also the running season is over you can go to the mountains and run all the way to the top. It is really fun at the top. You can see anything. You can break the mountain in to parts. So you can run a half then another half and run another half and ect. You can do that so when running season starts again you’ll be stronger. But did you know that Mo Farah is the fastest long distance runner in the world?     __________________________________________________________________________________________

RUNNING THE CURVE

mo-farah_2274434bIn the curve you have to tilt and lock in  your head a little bit. You do that so when your going fast you don’t go into another lane. Some young runners go into other lanes because they can’t control their speed in the curve. __________________________________________________________________________________________

 THE DISCUS

images
Statue  of Myron Discobolus a famous discus thrower. (He is  from Rome Italy.)

The Discus is a throwing event. When an athlete is doing a throwing event an official shouldn’t have their back turned because the discus thrower might release the discus and the official doesn’t know then the discus might hit the official and that would really hurt. the discus is heavy and it has a giant screw in the middle. You have to try to grip the discus with all five fingers and swing it in the air. If  your a runner you can become into a thrower. You can become a thrower because to be a runner you have to have power and speed. But in this case you just have to have power.

_________________________________________________________________ The  Pole Vault

downloadThe Pole vault is a jumping event. If your doing the pole vault and your pole breaks your not disqualified or anything. The officials will just make you do it again. But the Point of the pole vault is to run,use your pole to help fling yourself up and over the crossbar.

Hurdles

The Hurdles is a  and speed and power event. That’s because you need speed to go fast and you need power to jump over the hurdle. These are the only races that you can do in hurdling: 55, 100 (women), 110 (men), 200, and 400. If your about to jump over a hurdle and your hand knocks it down your disqualified from the race. Same for your trail leg. But if your trail leg makes the hurdle shake a little bit and if it doesn’t fall down then your fine.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________

FALSE STARTS

When you false start you are disqualified from a race. But if your a kid around 8 they give you about 3 chances. But in the olympics They give you one chance. After that your done for the race. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SHOT PUT

The shot put is a throwing event. There is a throwing sector for the ball to land in. But when you throw the ball you hold the ball to your neck. Then you push your hand in front and let go of the ball. But you need power for this. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________

JAVELIN

The Javelin is a throwing event. For this event your arms need to be really strong. When you throw the sharp stick which is the javelin you throw it up not straight. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

THE HIGH JUMP

The High Jump is a jumping event. This event includes power in your legs. That’s because you run right beside the mat and you try to jump over the crossbar with one leg. One of the most common types of high jump is the fosbury flop. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

STEEPLECHASE

Steeplechase is almost like the hurdles. It’s only that the hurdle is just bigger than a regular hurdle. It goes into all lanes of the track. When you jump over the giant hurdle It’s okay if you put your foot on top of it. After you jump over the hurdle there will be water that you jump into. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

RELAYS

Relays are team things. But in order to have a relay team you have to have four people that are in the same age group. The first runner should be good at starting. the second runner should be good at running the curve. The third runner should be good at running the straight away and the fourth runner should be good at speed. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

RACE WALKING

When your Race Walking you have to keep your legs straight not bent. Also you can’t run.You can only walk.

_________________________________________________________________________

LONG JUMP

The Long Jump is a Jumping event. When you run on the runway and you cross the board and then jump it’s a foul because you can only jump behind the board or on the board not pass the board.   ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

National track meets

In national track meets you might run in a big stadium with a lot of people in it. When you run a race the race might have a semifinal. Also you have to qualify for national track meets at other track meets. If you win your races you  get gold medals and you can ask someone to engrave your name in it and the time you ran plus where you ran.
